Battelle's Health Research and Analytics (HRA) business line is currently seeking an Epidemiologist II to support our government customer in Portsmouth, VA (partial remote available).
This Public Health (PH) program enables our government customer to maximize readiness through force health protection (FHP) strategies and solutions for current and potential Public Health (PH) threats.
The core scientific and technical capabilities and product lines in this program are to conduct Health Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Analysis; Disease and Injury Prevention; and PH Consultation and Support for the benefit of active-duty service members, retirees, and their families.
Battelle shall enable these capabilities and product lines by providing Scientific and Technical Information (STI) deliverables, by performing Research, Development, Test and Evaluation (RDT&E), and other Research and Development (R&D) related analytical services.
Job Summary Health Analysis provides epidemiologic expertise and leadership to improve the value of Navy Healthcare through evidence-based methods and clinical health analysis.
Conducts epidemiologic scientific and technical analysis for the customer’s public health programs including analyses of clinical data, medical and environmental health data, surveillance (including biosurveillance), and health assessments to develop studies, reports, and recommendations to prevent disease and injury and to improve health and medical readiness, value, quality, cost, and availability of care.
Responsibilities Drives customer conversations around data design and analytics.
Establishes data requirements from a non‐technical customer, writes the applicable programs, and delivers the results in a comprehensible format.
Formulates data collection, study design, and analysis plans.
Extracts data - in particular military healthcare claims data - from large tables.
Provides SAS programming and technical expertise on statistical analysis, methods, and techniques for epidemiological or research studies.
Constructs SAS programs.
Reviews SAS programs others have written for correctness and efficiency.
Routinely explores existing databases and resources to identify opportunities to improve existing or create new products.
Occasionally performs sample, size, and power calculations and stratification and randomization of studies.
Acts independently on issues within field of expertise.
Provides technical and subject matter expertise to junior epidemiologists.
Key Qualifications Master of science or Master of Public Health degree in epidemiology, public health, or related fields, with biostatistics coursework.
4+ years’ SAS experience writing and debugging programs.
Advanced expertise and mastery of the SAS language and/or other statistical packages such as R.
Experience with SAS DATA Step Processing, SQL Processing, SAS Macro Language, SAS/STAT, SAS/GRAPH, Data Management with Large Datasets.
Ability to obtain and maintain a U.
S.
government security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications Ability to apply and interpret analytical and mathematical tools through the programming environment to address complex issues involving multiple table structures with complex query designs.
5-12 years SAS experience preferred.
Experience manipulating complex datasets, specifically healthcare claims data.
Experience working with ICD-9/10-CM diagnosis and procedures codes and CPT codes.
Experience with Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC) Standards.
SAS Certified Clinical Trials Programmer Using SAS 9, SAS Certified Advanced Programmer for SAS 9, SAS Certified Base Programmer for SAS 9.
Experience utilizing Military Medicine Data: MHS, AHLTA, M2, MDR and MIP, CarePoint MHS Population Health Portal, or MHS Genesis.
Experience in publishing and presenting findings at state or national conferences.
Experience with PubMed, Medline and/or RefWorks.
