GENERAL SUMMARY
The Oral Surgery Assistant provides direct patient care, in a dual role, with the scope of service being both oral surgery and medical.
Provides assistance to the surgeon for surgeries involving the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Reports to department management.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides assistance to the oral and maxillofacial surgeon and other providers within the division for a variety of treatment procedures.
Assists in the outpatient clinic and operating room settings.
Obtains patient’s medical history and takes vital signs such as blood pressure and pulse.
Helps patients feel comfortable before, during and after treatment.
Provides patient education regarding treatments and post op care.
Develops and processes dental radiographs (x-rays), under supervision of licensed provider.
Obtains digital intra-oral impressions and when necessary alginates impressions under supervision of licensed provider.
Prepares and sterilizes instruments and equipment.
Can be assigned duties specific to other oral surgery specialties.
Performs office management tasks and clerical duties as required (e.
g.
, scheduling appointments, answering telephone calls, billing, and ordering supplies).
Performs other duties as assigned.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
Licensed as a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA), Registered Dental Assistant in Extended Functions (RDAEF) or graduate of an accredited dental assisting program.
State of Virginia X-ray Certification required.
Dental Anesthesia Assistant National Certification (DAANCE) is strongly encouraged at start of employment.
If not currently DAANCE certified, must work towards taking and passing exam within the first two years of employment.
If so desired by Dental Assistant, obtaining certification as a Surgical First Assistant will be encouraged and may lead to an expanded role in the operating room.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum 1-2 years of experience working as a Registered Dental Assistant.
Experience working in Oral Surgery preferred.
CPR Training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Normal patient care environment with moderate exposure to noise, dust, temperature and the like.
Frequent exposure to communicable disease and moderately adverse working conditions due to performance of certain patient care activities.
