GENERAL SUMMARY
The Perioperative Administrative Nurse – RN is responsible for performing telephone health history assessments and documents assessment information in the EMR.
Communication with anesthesia providers and surgeon offices when concerns related to the health history could compromise future surgical care needs.
Also responsible for providing essential preoperative information to families, including NPO instructions and arrival times.
Effectively operates information systems to accurately input data in a timely manner.
Maintains filing system, logs and records in an organized manner.
Reports to designated manager.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs successful telephone preoperative health history assessments of a pediatric patients using established guidelines/protocols and within the scope of practice.
Efficiently takes an accurate history, including pertinent medical history such as chronic medical conditions, current medication, past hospitalizations and surgeries, and medication allergies.
Provides reassurance and reinforcement of preoperative home care advice to the caller.
Provides appropriate teaching including NPO instructions and arrival times.
Completes necessary follow up as needed per policy.
Follows laws, policies, and regulatory requirements governing healthcare services and practices.
Performs other duties as assigned.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
Current Virginia state license as a Registered Nurse or Registered Nurse holding a valid Compact State license required.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice at a level normally acquired through the completion of an accredited School of Nursing.
One to two years of clinical experience required.
Medical surgical office or Perioperative setting (Day Surgery, PACU, OR) experience preferred.
Pediatric experience preferred.
Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice.
Knowledge of telephone-based clinical assessment techniques.
Ability to effectively gather and exchange information in both oral and written communications to coordinate services and multiple schedules based on surgical block time and guidelines.
Proficient computer and data entry skills required.
Ability to utilize scheduling software (e.
g.
Cerner) and maintain updated schedules.
Superior time management and organization skills.
Basic computer knowledge, comfortable with different programs, private home office with adequate cable modem/broadband access required.
Ability to work flexible shifts.
Submission and approval of Telecommuting request form required for designated telecommuting departments.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature and the like.
Will consider tele-commute option.
