JOB
The City of Norfolk's Department of General Services is currently seeking a Veterinary Technician that provides daily care to exotic and domestic animals in exhibits and holding facilities.
Participates in education, conservation and research involving the animal collection.
Supervises the veterinary clinic operations and medical care program under the general direction of Animal Division management and the Veterinarian.
Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $39,837
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Essential functions include but are not limited to: Interpret medical histories and relay pertinent information to the Clinic Director.
Safely and humanely restrain companion animals with an emphasis on fear free and low stress techniques.
Accurately record medical information into the clinic software.
Administer vaccinations, microchips, sedatives, pre-anesthetic drugs, and anesthetic drugs under the direction of the Clinic Director.
Perform general anesthesia safely on canines, felines and small mammals.
Perform dental exams, cleanings, radiographs and extractions.
Perform diagnostic services for Clinic Director to interpret, document results, and communicate to Veterinary Assistants.
Recover patients from anesthesia.
Provide post-operative, vaccination, preventative care, medication and microchipping counseling to clients, escalating concerns and inquiries to Clinic Director as appropriate.
Clean, sanitize, and maintain veterinary equipment and surgical tools.
Assist Clinic Director in oversight, training, and support for Veterinary Assistants, drafting SOPs and maintaining inventory.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Ability to lift 30 pounds and to sit, stand, bend, stop and walk for a full workday.
Ability to work around pet dander, dust and other allergens.
Must be comfortable handling dogs, cats, and other small animals of varying sizes and temperaments.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Ability to deal with difficult and stressful situations involving animals and customers.
Ability to use computer systems and learn new software.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Licensure in the State of Virginia as a Veterinary Technician.
Valid Driver's License.
Additional Preferred Certification: Certification in euthanasia by injection for the State of Virginia or willing/able to become certified during first year of employment.
Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5000 sign on bonus.
